Campus AI Unveils Major Expansion Plans in France with 3GW Goal

Campus AI Unveils Major Expansion Plans in France with 3GW Goal

Post by : Badri Ariffin

Campus AI has revealed its ambitious plans to broaden its operations throughout France, striving to establish up to 3 gigawatts (GW) of AI compute capacity across the nation. This expansion is predicated on the imminent selection of a second site, effectively doubling the initial investment made by the consortium and its partners.

This initiative is a collaborative effort among Bpifrance, France's public investment bank; Mistral, a prominent generative AI firm in Europe; MGX, an investment entity in artificial intelligence and advanced technologies; and NVIDIA, a leader in accelerated computing solutions.

The recent endeavor represents a crucial advancement of Campus AI beyond its flagship facility nestled in Fouju, located in the Seine-et-Marne area. The goal is to forge a premier pan-European network of AI factories, responding to the increasing demand for responsible and sustainable AI computing across the continent.

With the expansion, Campus AI will bolster the growth of Mistral by offering extensive computing capabilities across various sites. This initiative is poised to enhance France's stature as Europe’s premier locale for extensive, low-carbon AI infrastructure.

This announcement was made during the Choose France Summit, attended by French President Emmanuel Macron and His Excellency Khaldoon Al Mubarak, Chairman of the Executive Affairs Authority of Abu Dhabi and Secretary General of the Artificial Intelligence and Advanced Technology Council. Their participation underscored the strategic significance of the project for both France and the UAE.

The venture is anticipated to generate thousands of job opportunities throughout France. Campus AI is collaborating closely with French industrial enterprises involved in energy production, batteries, semiconductors, electronics, and other essential technologies. By integrating key sectors of the French industrial supply chain, the initiative aims to bolster France’s technological independence and foster a competitive European AI ecosystem.

The announcement follows the swift progress made at the original Fouju campus, where local authorities and community leaders have partnered with Campus AI to foster investment and create job opportunities in the vicinity. Designed with environmental considerations at the forefront, the campus utilizes France’s highly decarbonized electricity grid, and incorporates water-free cooling systems and energy-efficient infrastructure to champion sustainable AI development.

According to Campus AI, the subsequent site will adhere to a similar framework, emphasizing collaboration with local authorities, environmental stewardship, and the promotion of European AI innovation. This expansion is expected to further solidify France’s status as a pivotal center for sustainable artificial intelligence development in Europe.

Thibaud Desfossés, the President of Campus AI, remarked that France possesses the essential energy resources, talent, and research capabilities to take the lead in artificial intelligence within Europe. He mentioned that scaling up Campus AI to 3GW will create an open platform that empowers French suppliers, strengthens the local technology sector, and allows French AI enterprises to access substantial computing power that would otherwise be challenging to obtain.
