In a significant development, police in London have apprehended ten individuals believed to be involved in a series of anti-Jewish arson incidents and a potential new attack plot. The Metropolitan Police confirmed these arrests, noting that seven suspects were taken into custody in the past two days as part of a conspiracy to execute another arson attack.
Details on the specific target of the intended attack remain unclear, but officials speculate that it may relate to a Jewish site. The arrests occurred in multiple locations, including Harpenden and Stevenage, with some suspects released on bail while others await further questioning.
These recent arrests add to a growing list of apprehensions linked to arson incidents reported since March, which have now peaked at 23 arrests. One notable attack happened near a synagogue in northwest London, leading to forensic investigations at the site for evidence collection.
In another incident, a 39-year-old man was detained under the Terrorism Act 2000 after authorities found suspicious jars with powdery substances in Kensington Gardens. Further examination revealed that these substances posed no risk to the public, although investigations into their origins continue.
Law enforcement has associated some of these incidents with a group called Harakat Ashab al-Yamin al-Islamia, which allegedly has taken credit for several recent attacks. Reports indicate that this group attempted to use drones to deploy hazardous materials near the Israeli embassy, though no injuries were reported.
The situation is being monitored closely, with heightened security measures implemented across sensitive sites in the city. Authorities continue their investigation while encouraging the public to stay vigilant but avoid jumping to conclusions as they strive to avert further incidents.
