A tragic landslide struck central Vietnam on Sunday night, affecting a bus transporting 32 individuals from Da Lat to Nha Trang. Reports suggest that the disaster resulted in the deaths of six passengers, while 19 others sustained injuries, as indicated by local officials on Monday.
The incident unfolded on the perilous Khanh Le Pass, which is notorious for its susceptibility to landslides during heavy rain periods. Rescuers are currently working to extricate two passengers who are trapped within the bus, which lies largely buried beneath mud and large rocks.
The landslide was attributed to the intense rainfall battering the central region, emphasizing the hazards encountered by drivers during Vietnam's rainy season. Images released by local sources depicted the road completely obstructed by a thick layer of soil and oversized boulders, complicating rescue efforts.
“This section of the road poses significant dangers during heavy rainfall,” stated a local official. “We are deploying all available resources, including police, firefighters, and community volunteers, to assist in the rescue and aid the injured.”
In a related occurrence, three individuals have been reported missing in Danang after another landslide hit the area on Friday. This raises alarms about the increasing effects of the current heavy rainfall and flooding in Vietnam.
In light of these events, the Vietnamese government has urged citizens to exercise caution in areas prone to landslides and has dispatched emergency teams to oversee critical routes and ensure timely support.
This unfortunate bus accident highlights the escalating risks of landslides in central Vietnam during the monsoon season, prompting authorities to advocate for enhanced road safety protocols and disaster readiness to mitigate future incidents.
