In a standout performance, Kylian Mbappe netted twice, leading France to a commanding 3-0 victory over Sweden on Tuesday night in New York New Jersey. This win not only secured France's progression to the Round of 16 in the FIFA World Cup 2026 but also reinforced their status as strong contenders for the title.
With his two goals, Mbappe has set a new record for the most goals scored in World Cup knockout matches, bringing his total to 18 goals. He now trails Lionel Messi's overall World Cup tally by just one goal.
Additionally, Mbappe is now tied with Messi at six goals in the race for the coveted Golden Boot, but he holds the lead due to his two assists.
Bradley Barcola contributed to the scoreline, adding France’s second goal, as Didier Deschamps’ squad confidently advanced. They will face Paraguay in a knockout clash on July 4 in Philadelphia.
Sweden's defense managed to keep France at bay during the initial phases of the match. However, just before halftime, the deadlock was broken. Following a well-executed corner involving Michael Olise and Ousmane Dembele, Mbappe found himself in the penalty area, swiftly shifting and firing a powerful shot past Sweden's goalkeeper, Jacob Widell Zetterstrom.
In a touching moment, instead of celebrating, Mbappe ran over to embrace head coach Didier Deschamps, who had recently returned after attending his mother's funeral. The rest of the team soon joined in to support their coach.
The second half saw France assert their dominance. Shortly after the break, Olise delivered an impeccable through ball to Barcola, who finished confidently to increase the lead to 2-0.
Olise then provided another assist to Mbappe, who calmly slotted home his second goal, marking his ninth World Cup knockout goal and extending his record.
With victory assured, Deschamps substituted Mbappe late in the match, receiving a warm ovation as France secured another impressive win.
Despite his record-breaking feats, Mbappe has emphasized that winning the World Cup is his top priority, exhibiting strong leadership for his teammates.
Deschamps praised Mbappe’s all-around contribution, stating, "Kylian knows how to defend. He scores goals, more than anyone else. He’s on a mission and has embraced his captaincy role fully."
Reflecting on his goal celebration, Mbappe commented, "That’s the DNA of our group. We’re all together in this. Our coach is going through a tough time, and he’ll always have our support." When asked about the upcoming match, he added with a smile, "Right now, my focus is on the dressing room's air conditioning."
France remains unbeaten in their four matches at the FIFA World Cup 2026, scoring 13 goals and conceding only two. Their next challenge comes against Paraguay, who advanced by defeating Germany in a penalty shootout.
For Mbappe, this knockout match is another chance to enhance his remarkable World Cup legacy, as he closes in on Messi's overall World Cup scoring record while leading the Golden Boot race.
