Kuwait Partners with China for Mubarak Al-Kabeer Port Completion

Kuwait Partners with China for Mubarak Al-Kabeer Port Completion

Post by : Maya Rahman

Next week, Kuwait will formalize a significant contract with the China Communications Construction Company to advance the Mubarak Al-Kabeer Port project, as announced by Public Works Minister Noura Al-Mashaan. The ceremony will see the attendance of Kuwait’s prime minister alongside representatives from the Chinese delegation, underscoring the critical nature of this agreement.

This contract encompasses the engineering, procurement, and construction phases for the port's first segment, valued at approximately 1.219 billion Kuwaiti dinars, marking it as one of the nation’s most substantial infrastructure deals.

Strategically located on Bubiyan Island in northern Kuwait, the Mubarak Al-Kabeer Port is envisioned as a vital national endeavor aimed at establishing a stable trade route and positioning Kuwait as a central commercial nexus. China has expressed a desire to integrate the port into its Belt and Road Initiative to foster global trade links.

The Kuwaiti administration believes that the port will contribute to economic diversification, enhance GDP growth, and restore Kuwait's status in regional commercial and financial sectors. Officials reported that nearly half of the port’s initial phase is complete, though specifics on the remaining work were not disclosed.

This initiative is part of a series of large-scale projects being developed with Chinese collaboration, which include power and water facilities, renewable energy initiatives, waste management systems, and new residential developments. The partnership between Kuwait and China has strengthened throughout 2023, resulting in numerous agreements that highlight their evolving economic alliance.
