Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) on Saturday confirmed that Bangladesh fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman has been released from the franchise’s squad for the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 season, following a directive issued by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).
In an official statement, the franchise said the decision was taken after receiving instructions from the BCCI, which regulates the IPL. KKR added that the release was carried out after completing all formal procedures and consultations in accordance with league rules. The board has also granted permission to the franchise to sign a replacement player, with further details expected to be announced soon.
Earlier, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia stated that the board had asked KKR to release Mustafizur Rahman due to “recent developments.” He also confirmed that the franchise would be allowed to bring in a replacement as per IPL guidelines.
The move comes amid a political controversy surrounding the inclusion of the Bangladeshi pacer. The issue gained attention following reports of attacks on Hindu minorities in Bangladesh, which triggered strong reactions and criticism over Mustafizur’s selection for the IPL 2026 season.
Mustafizur Rahman was picked by the Kolkata-based franchise for ₹9.20 crore during the IPL auction held in December last year, making his exit a significant development ahead of the new season.
Reacting to the decision, BJP leader Sangeet Singh Som welcomed the move, calling it a step taken in line with public sentiment. He also made remarks targeting KKR co-owner Shah Rukh Khan, saying the decision reflected an understanding of the sentiments of people in the country.
With the IPL 2026 season drawing closer, KKR is now expected to announce a replacement player as it reshapes its squad following the BCCI’s directive.
