Madison Keys has started her Australian Open title defense with a strong win, defeating Ukrainian newcomer Oleksandra Oliynykova 7-6(6), 6-1 on Tuesday at Rod Laver Arena.
The match began with a rocky start for Keys, who lost two early games due to double faults and unforced errors. Despite this, she stayed calm and fought back to level the first set at 4-4. The set then moved into a tense tiebreak after Oliynykova hit several deep and tricky shots that challenged Keys’ rhythm.
Oliynykova even earned two set points, but Keys used her trademark big shots to save them. With determination, the ninth-seeded American finally took the first set and celebrated with a roar, showing her relief and renewed energy.
In the second set, Keys quickly took control, breaking Oliynykova’s serve and leading 3-0. She maintained her momentum, hitting strong serves and groundstrokes to close the match 6-1 in the second set.
This win allows Keys to advance to the second round, where she will face fellow American Ashlyn Krueger. The 30-year-old’s victory highlighted her ability to stay focused under pressure and her skill at turning difficult situations into a win.
Keys’ performance proves she is ready to defend her Australian Open title and continues to be a strong contender in Melbourne.
