In a standout performance, Kavem Hodge scored his second Test century, leading the West Indies on day three of their third Test against New Zealand. Hodge achieved an unbeaten 109, while Anderson Phillip added 12 runs, allowing the team to reach 381-6 and escape the follow-on after responding to New Zealand's formidable 575-8.
The West Indies were without Shai Hope, who had scored a century in the first Test but missed play due to illness. Currently, New Zealand leads the series 1-0, following a drawn first Test and a decisive nine-wicket victory in the second.
Hodge, who previously scored 120 runs against England in July 2024, had faced challenges, scoring below 50 in his last 16 innings. He spent more than three and a half hours at the crease, securing his century with a powerful pull shot off Michael Rae. “I’m thankful and proud to help the team,” Hodge remarked, highlighting his focus on New Zealand’s conditions and strategy.
He joined the game after John Campbell was out in the second over, forming vital partnerships: 66 runs with Tevin Imlach (27), 61 with Alick Athanaze (45), and 81 with Justin Greaves (43). Hodge skillfully tackled New Zealand's spinners and displayed confidence against pacers, particularly targeting the leg side.
Brandon King also contributed significantly with 63 runs, and John Campbell added 45 in a promising opening stand of 111 runs, marking their first century partnership and just the sixth for the West Indies in over a decade. Campbell fell to Jacob Duffy, who caught King after the ball swung unexpectedly.
As the pitch slowed and showed wear, New Zealand maintained pressure, with Daryl Mitchell and Ajaz Patel quickly dismissing Greaves and Roston Chase (2), leading Patel to his 86th Test wicket, his first in New Zealand.
The West Indies crossed 375 before the day's end, successfully avoiding the follow-on. New Zealand opted not to enforce it, having batted first to sidestep batting last on a deteriorating track.
Demonstrating resilience comparable to their second innings in the first Test, the West Indies showcased durability against a strong New Zealand score.
