Kartik Kumra, at the young age of 25, is establishing himself as a notable figure in the fashion world. Remarkably, he is self-taught, having never set foot in a fashion school. Today, notable celebrities don his creations, which have graced the prestigious Paris Fashion Week stage.
Interestingly, Kumra's path to fashion was not foreseeable. “My first love was football,” he recalls with a nostalgic grin. Even now, the sport holds a special place in his heart. Yet, his foray into fashion has led him to unexpected heights.
Known for modern aesthetics intertwined with India’s rich heritage, Kartik’s designs feature intricate, traditional craftsmanship. This includes Lucknow's chikan embroidery, block printing, and exquisite wool-silk textiles. His designs strike a balance, appealing to those who appreciate Indian culture as well as those drawn to their simplistic elegance and comfort.
His brand, Kartik Research, is gaining international acclaim, worn by stars such as rapper Kendrick Lamar and actor Paul Mescal on prominent red carpets. This surge in attention has positioned his brand firmly on the global map.
Kartik's fashion journey began amid the COVID-19 pandemic when, still a college student, he started creating clothing more seriously. What began as a modest endeavor in his family home has flourished beyond expectations.
In just five years, Kartik Research has expanded significantly, now available in 70 stores worldwide, including renowned retailers like Selfridges in London and 10 Corso Como in Milan. Just five months ago, he launched his boutique in New York, with plans for an additional section to debut shortly.
Time magazine recognized his talent by including him in its “Time 100 Next” list, which showcases young individuals shaping our future—a remarkable feat for someone of just 25.
When discussing his creative process, Kartik emphasizes the importance of subtlety. He infuses every piece with delicate details. For instance, a simple black linen shirt might feature tiny corner embroidery, and a jacket may boast an almost invisible design that reveals itself upon closer examination. This approach allows his designs to remain practical while adding a unique flair.
Growing up in Delhi, Kartik received unwavering support from his parents—his mother a career counselor and his father a businessman. Despite football being his first passion, they encouraged his exploration into the realm of fashion.
Today, Kartik Kumra inspires countless young minds. His journey serves as a testament to the idea that talent can blossom anywhere, even within a college room during a pandemic. Through diligence, imagination, and a profound connection to his roots, he has propelled Indian craftsmanship into the global arena.
