A controversy over IPL ticket access in Karnataka has taken a dramatic turn, with state legislators now set to receive free tickets and a dedicated stand at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium for upcoming matches.
The development came after a key meeting between Venkatesh Prasad, who is associated with the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA), and Chief Minister Siddaramaiah. The meeting reportedly helped resolve tensions after MLAs expressed dissatisfaction over not being allotted complimentary passes.
Initially, several MLAs had objected to being asked to purchase tickets online like the general public, arguing that elected representatives should receive special access. The issue escalated quickly, drawing political reactions across party lines.
Following negotiations, it has been decided that legislators will receive multiple tickets per match along with access to a reserved seating section during IPL games hosted in Bengaluru.
The opening match at the venue features Royal Challengers Bengaluru taking on Sunrisers Hyderabad, adding urgency to the resolution as the tournament begins.
Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar stated that due to time constraints and high demand, the government requested a limited number of tickets per MLA to accommodate more members.
However, the decision has sparked criticism. BJP leader BY Vijayendra publicly opposed the demand, stating that lawmakers should not seek privileges unavailable to ordinary citizens. Meanwhile, Tejasvi Surya criticized the situation, calling it an example of entitlement in politics.
The episode has reignited debate over VIP culture in India, especially in high-profile public events like the Indian Premier League, where ticket demand is extremely high.
