Veteran actor Kamal Haasan addressed the hurdles confronted by independent cinema in India, emphasizing its freedom and distinctiveness during the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) 2025 held in Goa.
While walking the red carpet before the premiere of his latest venture Amaran, Haasan remarked, “Independent cinema is truly independent, as free as India… please don’t restrict it to the confines of overly commercialized cinema.”
At 71, Haasan is celebrated for his pivotal role in Tamil cinema, adeptly merging experimental and mainstream works with classics like Apoorva Raagangal, Nayakan, Thevar Magan, and Sadma. He emphasized that indie films shouldn't conform to the standards of commercial cinema and voiced his long-standing concern over limited theatrical exposure, stating, “Yes, that's been my grievance for nearly four decades.”
Amaran's Premiere at IFFI 2025
Haasan was accompanied on the red carpet by Amaran's lead actors, Sivakarthikeyan and Sai Pallavi. This film, inspired by the story of Major Mukund Vardharajan, who was killed in action in Kashmir in 2014, opened the 56th IFFI.
Based on the book India's Most Fearless: True Stories of Modern Military Heroes, the film is directed by Rajkumar Periasamy. Haasan's most recent appearance was in Mani Ratnam's Thug Life, marking their first collaboration in nearly forty years, although the film did not succeed commercially.
