Nine men were injured after a suspected migrant smuggling operation ended in a dramatic crash near Kampung Sungai Rual in Jeli, Kelantan, on Thursday morning. Authorities confirmed that three individuals suffered serious injuries, including a Malaysian man believed to be involved in the illegal transportation of undocumented migrants.
The incident reportedly occurred around 7:30 a.m. along Jalan Bukit Cermin after a General Operations Force patrol team noticed a suspicious Proton Saga traveling on the East-West Highway. Officials suspected the vehicle was transporting undocumented foreign nationals.
According to Southeast Brigade General Operations Force commander Senior Assistant Commissioner Ahmad Radzi Hussain, the driver attempted to flee after realizing authorities were following the vehicle. The car accelerated rapidly in an attempt to escape arrest, triggering a high-speed pursuit by the GOF officers.
During the chase, the vehicle lost control near Kampung Sungai Rual before crashing into a roadside embankment. Emergency responders and police teams rushed to the scene shortly after the accident to assist the injured individuals and secure the area.
Police later detained the 21-year-old Malaysian driver along with eight Bangladeshi men aged between 20 and 40. Authorities confirmed that all injured individuals were transported to Jeli Hospital for medical treatment before several suspects were transferred to the district police headquarters for further investigation.
During inspections of the vehicle, officers reportedly discovered 10 yaba pills believed to contain methamphetamine. Investigators are now examining whether the case involves broader criminal activities linked to migrant trafficking and illegal drug possession.
Authorities stated that the operation reflects ongoing enforcement efforts against cross-border migrant smuggling networks operating in the region. Law enforcement agencies continue increasing patrols and surveillance along routes frequently used for illegal transportation activities near Malaysia’s northern border areas.
The case is currently being investigated under laws related to migrant smuggling and narcotics offences. Police have not ruled out the possibility of additional arrests as investigations continue into the wider network connected to the incident.
