Washington / Beirut: US President Donald Trump announced on Thursday that leaders from Israel and Lebanon have consented to a 10-day ceasefire, a crucial step toward calming tensions in the area.
The ceasefire is scheduled to commence at 5 p.m. EST (2100 GMT). While Trump’s message on Truth Social didn’t specify a date initially, confirmation from a US official indicated the truce would begin the same day.
This announcement follows a series of high-level diplomatic talks. Trump stated he had “excellent conversations” with Benjamin Netanyahu and Joseph Aoun, both parties agreeing to halt hostilities temporarily to foster peace.
Trump has empowered senior officials, including Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and Joint Chiefs Chairman Dan Caine, to engage closely with both nations to support the ceasefire efforts.
In the meantime, a prominent Hezbollah member, Hassan Fadlallah, revealed that Iran’s ambassador to Lebanon notified them of a possible ceasefire starting Thursday evening. However, he stressed that Hezbollah’s adherence hinges on Israel ceasing all hostile actions.
The conflict intensified on March 2 when Hezbollah launched retaliatory attacks in support of Iran, leading to a significant military response from Israel. Since then, Lebanese reports cite over 2,100 fatalities and more than 1.2 million people displaced.
From Israel's perspective, officials note that Hezbollah's strikes have led to two civilian and 13 military casualties.
Despite this ceasefire announcement, an Israeli security source has stated that there are no intentions to pull back troops from southern Lebanon during this ceasefire.
In addition, Trump also extended an invitation to Netanyahu and Aoun for talks in the White House, aiming for long-term peace resolutions. It is noteworthy that Israel and Lebanon have been in a formal state of war since 1948.
This proposed ceasefire is being viewed as a vital chance to ease tensions and set the groundwork for a sustainable diplomatic resolution in the conflict-ridden area.
