On Thursday, Israel's military aid agency, COGAT, revealed that discussions with Egypt are in progress to reopen the Rafah border crossing for Gaza's residents. An exact reopening date has yet to be announced.
COGAT is responsible for overseeing the delivery of humanitarian assistance and various goods into Gaza. The agency made it clear that while preparations are underway, the primary avenue for humanitarian aid will remain the Kerem Shalom crossing with Israel, along with other established entry points. COGAT stated, “Humanitarian aid will not pass through the Rafah crossing. This was never agreed upon at any stage.”
The anticipated reopening of Rafah follows Israel's indication that it might maintain the crossing's closure and restrict aid into Gaza. Concerns were raised regarding the slow repatriation of deceased hostages by Hamas, reflecting the persistent tensions despite a ceasefire that concluded two years of conflict. This ceasefire facilitated the release of all living hostages held by Hamas.
Reports surfaced on Wednesday indicating that the Rafah crossing might start allowing movement in and out of Gaza as early as Thursday, but official confirmation remains pending.
COGAT's announcement highlights the intricate relationship between humanitarian efforts and security issues in the area. While aid continues to enter Gaza through alternative crossings, the facilitation of people movement at Rafah remains a complex and sensitive subject, contingent on ongoing negotiations between Israel and Egypt.
The Rafah crossing, adjacent to Egypt, serves as a crucial outlet for Gazans seeking to leave the enclave, making its potential reopening vital for families and civilians impacted by the ongoing strife.
The circumstances are continually evolving, with authorities closely monitoring both humanitarian needs and security conditions.
