Escalation in the Gulf: Iran Targets Kuwait and Bahrain with Missiles

Escalation in the Gulf: Iran Targets Kuwait and Bahrain with Missiles

Post by : Badri Ariffin

Late Tuesday, Iran escalated military tensions by launching a series of missile and drone attacks aimed at Kuwait and Bahrain.

Kuwait's state news outlet KUNA reported that authorities have advised citizens to adhere to safety protocols and to steer clear of any debris or unidentified objects that may appear in the aftermath of the attacks.

The US Central Command (CENTCOM) indicated that two missiles aimed at Kuwait either fell short of hitting their targets or disintegrated mid-flight. Additional reports suggested that multiple ballistic missiles targeted regional sites but did not succeed, while three aimed toward Bahrain were intercepted effectively.

While Kuwait and Bahrain have not formally confirmed CENTCOM's statements regarding the events, Bahrain activated warning sirens nationwide as a precautionary response.

CENTCOM also reported that US forces thwarted Iranian drones that were targeting civilian vessels in nearby waters and American troops stationed in Kuwait. Furthermore, US military forces executed strikes on Iran's Qeshm Island following attempted Iranian assaults.

Iranian media, on the other hand, claimed that the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) targeted the headquarters of the US Fifth Fleet in Bahrain along with other military installations in the vicinity. This was purportedly in retaliation for a US attack that affected a communications tower near Qeshm Island.

CENTCOM clarified that all Iranian missile strikes were unsuccessful and reiterated that US forces are on high alert for any potential aggression.

Since late February, Iran has consistently launched attacks targeting areas where US military personnel are present within the Gulf. This latest round follows prior Iranian offensives against Kuwait earlier in May.

Despite an announced preliminary agreement last week aimed at curbing hostilities, that pact has yet to be finalized.

Reports from Tehran indicate that direct communication channels with Washington have been reduced. Nevertheless, President Donald Trump maintains that dialogues are progressing.

In a recent social media update, Trump affirmed that discussions have been ongoing and continue, notwithstanding the current military strain.
