Iran has confirmed that its Intelligence Minister, Esmail Khatib, was killed in an Israeli airstrike, marking a major escalation in the ongoing conflict between the two nations. His death comes amid a series of targeted strikes by Israel on high-ranking Iranian officials.
Khatib is the third senior Iranian leader to be killed within 24 hours, following the deaths of top security official Ali Larijani and Basij commander Gholamreza Soleimani. The back-to-back eliminations signal an aggressive Israeli strategy targeting Iran’s security leadership.
Esmail Khatib served as Iran’s Intelligence Minister since August 2021 and was considered a key figure in the country’s internal security and intelligence network. He had close ties with Iran’s leadership and was previously sanctioned by the United States over alleged cyber and security-related activities.
The killings come at a critical time as tensions in the Middle East continue to rise following recent US-Israel strikes on Iran. Experts warn that targeting top officials could further escalate the conflict, increasing the risk of a wider regional confrontation.
