A cargo aircraft operated by Turkish ACT Airlines that veered off the runway at Hong Kong International Airport last month, resulting in the tragic deaths of two ground crew members, was found to have experienced a sudden engine surge in one of its four engines post-landing, according to an initial investigation.
The preliminary findings released on Tuesday by the Hong Kong Air Accident Investigation Authority (AAIA) revealed that the flight from Dubai operated on behalf of Emirates was proceeding as planned until shortly after it touched down. This unanticipated acceleration is suspected to have caused the plane to skid off the runway.
This unfortunate incident has sparked serious discussions surrounding the safety protocols for cargo flights, particularly at one of the most frequented airports globally. Emergency personnel swiftly responded as the fully loaded cargo plane slid dangerously close to active operation zones.
Investigation teams from the AAIA are currently reviewing flight data recorders, pilot interactions, and maintenance records to clarify the exact circumstances that led to the runway excursion. While preliminary evaluations suggest a potential technical fault with the engine, further inquiry is necessary before arriving at conclusive findings.
ACT Airlines and Emirates have both extended their heartfelt condolences to the victims' families. They have pledged complete collaboration with the AAIA and committed to reassessing their safety measures to avert the likelihood of such future incidents.
“This initial report underscores the need for rigorous inspection and oversight of aircraft engines, particularly during landing when planes are at greater risk,” commented Elaine Wong, Chairperson of the AAIA. “Our foremost goal remains to ensure the aviation sector learns from this incident to bolster safety procedures.”
With an upswing in cargo flight traffic at Hong Kong International Airport, a pivotal junction connecting Asia to Europe and the Middle East, experts have raised alarms about the rising operational demands potentially elevating the risk of such accidents, particularly concerning older aircraft models.
This AAIA report emerges amidst intensifying scrutiny regarding airport operations and cargo handling methods. While runway excursions are infrequent, they can lead to considerable financial setbacks, operational disruptions, and, tragically, loss of life.
Subsequent updates will follow as the AAIA finalizes its comprehensive investigation, covering detailed evaluations of engine functionality, pilot actions, and safety protocols on the ground. Authorities have stated that the runway has been reopened for regular air traffic after meticulous inspection and clearance.
