Authorities in South Africa have initiated an inquiry regarding allegations that Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla, daughter of former President Jacob Zuma, may have facilitated the recruitment of South African men for military service in Russia. This situation has prompted serious concerns domestically and triggered high-level diplomatic discussions.
The investigation involves 17 South African individuals who were reportedly misled with offers of security training and employment in Russia. Upon arrival, they were allegedly coerced into joining a Russian mercenary group and deployed to the Ukraine front lines. Notably, eight of the men are from the same family.
These allegations were outlined in an affidavit from Zuma's sister, indicating that the men were unaware they were being recruited for military purposes and had no intention to engage in warfare.
Police officials have indicated that the investigation is in its preliminary phases, with potential charges contingent upon further evidence review. Given the men’s precarious situation in war zones in eastern Ukraine, the urgency of the matter has been underscored by authorities.
The foreign ministry of South Africa has confirmed its engagement with both the Russian and Ukrainian governments to facilitate the safe return of the men, describing the circumstances as “extremely difficult” due to their current locations in active combat areas.
Distress signals from the men, who are between the ages of 20 and 39, were received after they realized the deception that led them into this perilous situation. South African law prohibits citizens from engaging in foreign military actions without official consent, escalating the gravity of these allegations.
Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla, serving as a parliament member for the MK Party, already faces separate legal challenges related to the violent protests in South Africa in 2021. Despite the serious nature of the current accusations, neither she nor her party has issued a statement.
Local officials are committed to pursuing diplomatic avenues for the men’s safe return while the police continue their investigation into the circumstances of the claimed recruitment and accountability.
