His Excellency Elias Bou Saab, Deputy Speaker of the Lebanese Parliament, asserted Lebanon's potential for recovery and sustained stability amid ongoing regional challenges during a conversation at the Dubai Press Club (DPC).
Entitled “Lebanon Between Stability and Regional Dynamics,” the session was part of DPC's dialogue series, welcoming attendees such as Maryam Al Mulla, DPC Director, along with various media professionals and thought leaders.
In the dialogue, Bou Saab addressed significant political and economic hurdles facing Lebanon, stressing that the country’s future is heavily influenced by broader regional interactions with Gulf nations, Iran, Russia, and China.
He cautioned that any rise in regional tensions, particularly concerning Iran, would have adverse effects on Lebanon's political and economic landscape.
Conversely, he maintained an optimistic outlook, asserting that Lebanon is endowed with robust economic and human resources capable of fostering quicker recovery than anticipated. Additionally, he identified the Lebanese diaspora as a crucial support system for the national economy.
Bou Saab stated that enhancing stability would pave the way for essential reforms and bolster state institutions. He underscored the need for advancements aligned with the Taif Agreement, emphasizing governance and maintaining arms under the control of the Lebanese Armed Forces.
Regarding investment prospects, Bou Saab claimed Lebanon still presents significant opportunities for investors and that an environment of improved stability could encourage increased economic activity and foreign investment in the near future.
Looking forward, he called on businesses and investors to gear up for upcoming developments, expressing assurance that Lebanon could regain its pivotal economic position in the region once regional tensions subside.
He commended Dubai and the UAE for their exemplary economic model, attributing their achievements to diligent planning and robust leadership.
He praised Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum’s vision for transforming challenges into opportunities, emphasizing a focus on development and expansion.
Recalling Sheikh Mohammed’s visit to the American University in Dubai post-September 11 attacks, Bou Saab noted the proactive decision to double student enrollment as a testament to visionary leadership in tough times.
He concluded that major economic opportunities are anticipated in the UAE and Dubai following the current regional crisis, asserting that nations with solid and sustainable economies will be best poised for future success.
