DP World has embarked on a pioneering effort in sustainable port development by initiating the first phase of its Living Seawalls project at Jebel Ali Port. This groundbreaking initiative has deployed 1,000 eco-engineered panels, transforming conventional seawalls into lively marine habitats, thereby fostering biodiversity in regions previously void of ecological engagement.
In partnership with Living Seawalls, a scientific endeavor from the Sydney Institute of Marine Science, the project is anticipated to expand to an ambitious 6,000 modular panels by 2028. This expansion will establish the area’s longest uninterrupted waterfront structure devoted to nurturing flourishing ecosystems.
Each panel is expertly designed with varying shapes and textures that replicate natural rock formations, providing optimal surfaces for marine life to inhabit, thrive, and grow. These panels aim to bolster ecological functions while ensuring the port operates effectively.
Biodiversity assessments at Jebel Ali are set to commence in 2026, contributing valuable insights to global efforts in integrating marine ecosystems with port operations. This initiative builds upon DP World’s earlier pilot at the Port of Callao in Peru, where research recorded 66 marine species over a year, including unique varieties exclusive to the Living Seawalls panels. These findings underscore the efficacy of science-driven designs to enhance biodiversity while steering clear of invasive species.
The Living Seawalls project is closely aligned with DP World’s Ocean Strategy and global biodiversity initiatives under the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. The company also continues to support various nature-positive projects, including the Dubai Reef initiative and sustainable port waste management strategies.
As environmental challenges mount for coastal cities, Jebel Ali’s Living Seawalls serve as a scalable model demonstrating how ports can harmoniously blend scientific insight, sustainability, and operational requirements, paving the way for eco-sensitive waterfront development.
