An IndiGo flight traveling from Jeddah to Hyderabad was diverted to Mumbai on Saturday following a security threat warning a "human bomb" onboard. The Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) received the threat email early in the morning, prompting immediate action to ensure passenger safety.
According to airport officials, the threat email arrived at approximately 5:30 am, warning authorities to prevent the landing of IndiGo flight 6E 68 in Hyderabad. The email specifically mentioned, “...onboard LTTE-ISI operatives have planned a major 1984 Madras Airport Modus operandi style blast,” referencing a past terror incident.
In response, the aircraft was promptly rerouted to Mumbai’s airport where it landed safely without incident. IndiGo confirmed the security threat and said they cooperated fully with all relevant authorities to carry out thorough security checks before the plane was cleared to resume operations.
An IndiGo spokesperson said in a statement, “A security threat was received for IndiGo flight 6E 68 operating from Jeddah to Hyderabad on November 1 and the aircraft was diverted to Mumbai. Following the established protocol, we informed the relevant authorities immediately and fully cooperated with them in carrying out the necessary security checks before the aircraft is cleared for further operations.”
This incident highlights the stringent security protocols currently in place across Indian airports, which swiftly respond to threats ensuring passenger safety remains paramount.
The Rajiv Gandhi International Airport and IndiGo Airlines have not reported any further disruptions related to this flight. Authorities continue to investigate the origin and validity of the threat email.
Passengers on board were reportedly calm and were provided with all necessary support during the diversion. The flight is expected to resume its journey following clearance from security officials.
This security alert comes as airports across the globe remain vigilant amid rising concerns about threats targeting air travel. Hyderabad airport authorities have reassured the public of their commitment to passenger safety and stringent security checks.
