India's leading airline, IndiGo, is grappling with a significant operational dilemma, marked by ongoing flight cancellations as a result of a pilot shortage. For a third consecutive day, travelers find themselves stranded across various airports nationwide. Earlier today, at least 175 additional flights were scrapped, following 150 cancellations on Wednesday.
The major impact is seen at key airports in Bengaluru, Delhi, and Hyderabad. Bengaluru alone reported 73 cancellations, with Delhi experiencing around 30 and Hyderabad about 68. Frustrated travelers formed long lines at ticketing areas as they attempted to reschedule their travel plans or seek alternative routes.
IndiGo, which commands more than 60% of India’s domestic air travel market, has struggled to adjust flight schedules in light of new stringent crew safety protocols triggered by the aviation regulator to combat pilot fatigue. These regulations, effective from November 1, mandate extended rest periods for pilots and impose stricter limitations on nighttime flying.
The Federation of Indian Pilots criticized IndiGo for its inadequate preparations to implement these changes. They claim that the airline did not efficiently update rosters and failed to reorganize flight schedules before the deadline, leading to an acute shortage of pilots and resulting operational chaos.
Although IndiGo has not issued a new statement on Thursday, they previously attributed the cancellations to various factors, including the newly imposed duty time restrictions. On Wednesday, they mentioned making “calibrated adjustments” to manage the turmoil. However, the experience for passengers remains far from seamless.
This turmoil severely tarnishes IndiGo's public image. Over the last two decades, the airline cultivated a stellar reputation for punctuality, even touting the term “IndiGo Standard Time.” Known for timely departures, their recent pattern of last-minute cancellations has led to doubts among travelers and industry experts regarding their reliability.
The current disruptions serve as a stark reminder of the challenges faced by India's rapidly expanding aviation market, especially amid sudden regulatory shifts. While tackling pilot fatigue is crucial for safety, the lack of readiness has resulted in disarray for passengers who heavily depend on IndiGo for their travels.
As the situation develops, many air travelers are optimistic for a swift stabilization of IndiGo’s operations. In the meantime, the airline is tasked with rapidly reorganizing rosters, enhancing communication, and restoring customer trust.
