Severe Winter Storm Disrupts Life in Eastern US

Severe Winter Storm Disrupts Life in Eastern US

Post by : Badri Ariffin

Washington, US: A severe winter storm is currently affecting the eastern part of the United States, resulting in nearly one million residents losing power and over 10,000 flight cancellations. The icy weather brings not only heavy snowfall and freezing rain but also perilously low temperatures.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS), dangerously low temperatures and unsafe conditions are anticipated to persist for several days, posing risks for travel and infrastructure. States that are facing significant impacts include Tennessee, Mississippi, Texas, Louisiana, Kentucky, Georgia, Virginia, and Alabama.

PowerOutage.us indicates that over 850,000 customers are currently without electrical service, with Tennessee facing the worst, where 290,000 accounts are down, alongside more than 100,000 in Mississippi, Texas, and Louisiana.

Meteorologist Allison Santorelli has referred to this storm as "unique" due to its extensive reach, impacting nearly 213 million individuals over a 2,000-mile area stretching from New Mexico and Texas to New England.

Labelled as "historic," President Donald Trump has authorized federal emergency disaster declarations, with around 20 states plus the District of Columbia declaring weather emergencies. He urged residents to "stay safe, and stay warm."

This winter storm has led to significant travel chaos, as major airlines alert passengers to numerous cancellations and delays. FEMA has mobilized supplies and search-and-rescue teams in affected areas. Additionally, Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem has advised the public to prepare by stockpiling fuel and food and taking necessary precautions.

The NWS has warned that heavy icing could lead to prolonged power outages, significant tree damage, and extremely hazardous travel conditions even in regions less accustomed to severe winter weather.
