In an exhilarating Game 3 of the NHL Eastern Conference Final, the Carolina Hurricanes edged out the Montreal Canadiens 3-2 in overtime, seizing a crucial 2-1 lead in the series. Andrei Svechnikov netted the game-winner at 14:06 of overtime, marking Carolina's second consecutive victory in extra time against Montreal and propelling them closer to the Stanley Cup Final.
The encounter unfolded at the Bell Centre in Montreal, showcasing a highly competitive spirit from both teams right from the start. Carolina displayed aggressive attacking play early on, with defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere scoring the first goal after a fortunate rebound landed in his path.
Montreal quickly struck back later in the first period, with Mike Matheson capitalizing on a pass from rookie Ivan Demidov, bringing the crowd to their feet with an equalizer. However, Carolina regained the lead almost instantly, thanks to veteran forward Taylor Hall, who scored after skillfully gathering his own rebound, making it 2-1.
In the second period, the Canadiens leveled the score again through Lane Hutson during a power play, who executed a smooth passing play with Cole Caufield near the crease, resulting in a 2-2 tie that halted Carolina's streak of successful penalty kills.
As the third period unfolded, both teams crafted scoring opportunities, but strong defensive plays and goaltending kept the score unchanged. Montreal seemed to have taken the lead mid-period with a goal from Noah Dobson, only for it to be disallowed following a successful offside challenge by Carolina. This decision proved pivotal in maintaining the tie as the game transitioned to overtime.
In overtime, the Hurricanes maintained their offensive onslaught, ultimately finding the winning moment through Svechnikov. The dynamic forward unleashed a wrist shot from just inside the faceoff circle that managed to slip past Montreal's goaltender Jakub Dobes amidst traffic. Initially credited to Sebastian Aho, the goal was later rightfully attributed to Svechnikov after review.
Hurricanes' Frederik Andersen recorded 11 saves, while the Canadiens’ Jakub Dobes turned aside 35 shots, despite the defeat. Carolina heavily outshot Montreal for much of the match, continuing their dominant form as they aspire for another championship appearance.
Carolina's latest victory marks their fifth overtime win this postseason, boosting their playoff record to an impressive 10-1 following the opening loss in the Eastern Conference Final series. After a significant bounce back from an earlier 6-2 defeat in Game 1, they are riding a wave of momentum heading into Game 4.
On the other hand, the Canadiens face consecutive playoff losses for the first time this season. Nevertheless, they exhibited tremendous resilience and enjoyed strong backing from their fans. Coach Martin St. Louis emphasized the need for enhanced execution and a more robust pace to counter Carolina’s aggressive strategies.
Game 4 is on the horizon in Montreal, where the Canadiens aim to equalize the series before it shifts back to Carolina. Analysts believe the rivalry remains fiercely contested, but the Hurricanes’ recent overtime wins provide them with a crucial psychological edge as they advance.
