False Bomb Threat at ISRO Bengaluru Sparks Major Security Alert

False Bomb Threat at ISRO Bengaluru Sparks Major Security Alert

Post by : Badri Ariffin

On Thursday, a bomb threat email directed to the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) headquarters in Bengaluru prompted a comprehensive security operation, which ultimately revealed the threat to be unfounded.

Immediately after the alarming email was received, police units, including the Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad (BDDS) and a dog squad, arrived at the ISRO site. They promptly initiated an exhaustive inspection of the area to ensure the safety of all personnel present.

Precautionary Evacuations Undertaken

In adherence to standard safety protocols, all staff members were evacuated from the premises while security teams conducted a meticulous search throughout the facility.

The extensive search yielded no suspicious items or explosives, leading a senior police officer to declare the bomb threat a hoax.

Investigation Launched by Police

Post-incident, the Sanjaynagar Police Station opened a case and launched an investigation aimed at identifying the origin of the threatening email and apprehending the individual responsible.

Authorities indicated that the inquiry is actively underway.

Delhi Police Arrests Individual Linked to Series of Hoax Bomb Threats

In an associated event, Delhi Police apprehended a 36-year-old man from Ghaziabad who allegedly sent a sequence of hoax bomb threat emails targeting various crucial government institutions, such as the National Investigation Agency (NIA), ISRO, and others.

According to law enforcement, the suspect has been undergoing treatment for a mental disorder since 2008.

Multiple Government Entities Targeted by Threat Emails

Law enforcement stated that the emails, dispatched on June 29, falsely claimed the presence of bombs at several high-security sites, including the NIA headquarters and ISRO.

Also included was a claim that an Air India flight from New Delhi to New York was packed with explosives, leading to immediate security measures across various agencies.

After adhering to standard operational protocols and performing thorough inspections, authorities confirmed all threats were unfounded.

Technical Investigation Leads to Arrest

Investigators began following the electronic trail left by the emails shortly after the incidents were reported.

Law enforcement scrutinized two email accounts suspected of being used to dispatch the messages. Linking the digital activity to a phone number ultimately facilitated the identification of the suspect.

Through technical surveillance, police tracked the perpetrator to Sanyog Nagar in Ghaziabad on June 30, where they engaged with him before proceeding further.

Long-standing Mental Health Issues of the Accused

Nishant Tyagi, the identified suspect, had previously pursued his education through an open system and began a bachelor's degree in 2010 but did not finalize his studies.

Initial inquiries revealed Tyagi's ongoing treatment for a mental illness since 2008 at various health facilities, corroborated by family members.

Law enforcement confirmed that no explosives, weapons, or other suspicious materials were discovered during their investigation.

Ongoing Inquiry

Authorities are continuing their investigation to ascertain the motive behind the hoax bomb threat emails and understand the context in which they were sent. Further legal measures will follow based on the findings of this inquiry.
