Hezbollah Decries Israeli Drone Strike in Southern Lebanon That Kills Two

Hezbollah Decries Israeli Drone Strike in Southern Lebanon That Kills Two

Post by : Badri Ariffin

On Wednesday, an Israeli drone targeted a vehicle in southern Lebanon, claiming the lives of two individuals, as reported by Lebanese state media. This aerial strike has drawn sharp condemnation from Hezbollah, which characterized the incident as a substantial breach of the ceasefire agreement.

The National News Agency (NNA) of Lebanon indicated that the strike took place near Kfar Rumman, directly resulting in the fatalities.

Israeli Military Claims to Have Targeted Hezbollah Operatives

Earlier the same day, the Israeli Defense Forces announced it had aimed at "two armed Hezbollah operatives" situated in Ali al-Taher Ridge near Nabatieh. According to their statement, these individuals were seen as an imminent threat, justifying ongoing military actions.

Later, the Israeli military also conveyed having struck a vehicle carrying suspects in the security zone, highlighting their concern for the safety of Israeli soldiers.

Hezbollah's Response to the Attack

Hezbollah issued a forceful condemnation of the drone strike, labeling it a blatant violation of the ceasefire.

In their statement, the Iran-supported group noted that this strike, occurring within 48 hours, specifically targeted Lebanese citizens examining their homes near Kfar Rumman.

Hezbollah emphasized its dedication to maintaining the ceasefire while asserting that such Israeli actions were distinctly out of line with the agreement, affirming their intent to vigilantly monitor and document future occurrences.

Persistent Border Tensions Escalate

This latest strike emerged just one day after two additional fatalities surfaced from Israeli fire in southern Lebanon.

Tensions flared on March 2 when Hezbollah initiated rocket attacks into Israel, claiming retaliatory motives after the death of Iran's supreme leader due to U.S.-Israeli strikes.

Israel's response included extensive air raids coupled with a ground offensive. Lebanese authorities report that the continuing conflict has led to over 4,100 deaths within the nation.

New Diplomacy Amid Ongoing Tensions

Recently, Pakistan and Qatar, mediators between Iran and the U.S., declared the establishment of a "de-confliction cell" designed to mitigate escalation risks in Lebanon, following discussions in Switzerland aimed at broader Middle Eastern peace.

Iran has emphasized tying the resolution of regional conflicts to the progress in addressing the Lebanon situation.

Israel Plans to Maintain Troops in Southern Lebanon

Despite a drop in violence recently, Israel's Defense Minister, Israel Katz, affirmed that Israeli forces will not be withdrawn from southern Lebanon.

Speaking from Tel Aviv, Katz noted that Israel has decided against withdrawal and that the U.S. has not requested such a move.

Libanon's Position on Ongoing Discussions

In response to U.S. pressures, Lebanese officials initiated direct discussions with Israel in Washington back in April, striving to keep these negotiations distinct from U.S.-Iran talks.

Lebanese President Joseph Aoun reaffirmed on Wednesday that current discussions in Washington are independent of the dialogues between U.S. and Iranian representatives in Switzerland.
