The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) of Dubai has inaugurated the extensive Hessa Street Development Project, which spans 4.5 km between Sheikh Zayed Road and Al Khail Road. This initiative is designed to enhance traffic flow and significantly reduce travel times along one of the city’s crucial corridors.
The transformation involves expanding Hessa Street from two lanes to four lanes in each direction, along with critical upgrades at four prominent intersections: Sheikh Zayed Road, First Al Khail Street, Al Asayel Street, and Al Khail Road. These enhancements will double the road's capacity from 8,000 vehicles per hour to 16,000 vehicles per hour in both directions.
Consequently, the travel time for users along this corridor has been notably reduced from 15 minutes to just 4 minutes, facilitating quicker daily commutes.
His Excellency Mattar Al Tayer, Director General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of RTA, noted that this initiative supports Dubai's aim to bolster infrastructure, enhance mobility, and accommodate the swift pace of urban expansion. He indicated that Hessa Street plays a vital role in serving key residential areas such as Al Sufouh 2, Al Barsha, and Jumeirah Village Circle, which are anticipated to house more than 640,000 residents by 2030.
Key Features of the Initiative:
Installation of a two-lane ramp over the Dubai Metro Red Line to ensure seamless access from Sheikh Zayed Road to Hessa Street.
Widening of the bridge at First Al Khail Street to accommodate four lanes in each direction.
Conception of a new parallel bridge at Al Asayel Street to boost capacity.
Development of directional ramps and supplementary bridges at Al Khail Road for improved connectivity towards Sharjah and Deira.
Moreover, RTA has initiated Phase 2 of the project, planned to extend Hessa Street from Al Khail Road to Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, covering 3 km. This stage comprises the construction of 8,835 metres of bridges along with a 480-metre tunnel.
Phase 2 is projected to enhance road capacity from 4,000 to 8,000 vehicles per hour and shorten travel time from 24 minutes to merely 5 minutes. It will also enhance connectivity to several vital communities, including Jumeirah Village Circle, Arjan, Dubai Science Park, Al Barsha South, Jumeirah Lakes Towers, and Emirates Hills.
This comprehensive project is set to benefit roughly 650,000 residents and facilitate nearly half a million trips each day, marking a significant advancement in Dubai's transportation framework.
