Harvard University has reported unauthorized access to one of its key databases following a phone phishing attack earlier this week. This breach has revealed personal information pertaining to its alumni, donors, and some of its students and faculty members. The university confirmed that the incident occurred on Tuesday, impacting data associated with fundraising and alumni interaction efforts.
According to officials, the compromised database holds contact information, donation histories, and other relevant data. While the attacker was unable to access academic systems or financial information, the exposed personal details still raise significant concerns for many individuals linked to Harvard.
As the oldest and wealthiest university in the US, Harvard typically secures over a billion dollars in donations annually. This marks the second cybersecurity inquiry the university has initiated in 2025, following an investigation in October regarding its data safety during a broader hacking campaign affecting a well-known software provider.
Tim Bailey, director of communications for Harvard University Information Technology, emphasized the swift response following the discovery of the breach. He noted that access was quickly revoked and cybersecurity professionals were enlisted to reinforce the system. The university is also coordinating with law enforcement to further the investigation.
Harvard is not alone among elite US universities facing cyber threats. Recent months have seen similar breaches at several Ivy League schools. For instance, Princeton University announced that its database containing details about alumni and donors was compromised on November 15. Additionally, the University of Pennsylvania discovered breaches in systems related to alumni and development efforts on October 31.
Columbia University experienced a significant cybersecurity incident in June, resulting in the exposure of personal data for nearly 870,000 individuals, including students and applicants.
Cybersecurity experts highlight the appeal of American universities as targets, given the vast amount of personal and financial information they hold. With multiple esteemed institutions facing recent attacks, there is increasing demand for universities to enhance digital security measures and safeguard sensitive data more effectively.
