As part of its dialogue series, the Dubai Press Club (DPC) conducted an online session titled “The Gulf in the Aftermath of the Iran Ceasefire”, featuring prominent regional figures to explore recent events.
Among the participants were Kuwaiti media figure Mohammed Al-Mulla and Bahraini writer Sawsan Al-Sha’er, moderated by Mohammed Al-Ahmed from Abu Dhabi Media Network.
The discussion revolved around the shifting dynamics in the region, with a focus on global efforts aimed at reducing tensions since the Iran ceasefire. The speakers acknowledged the crucial role of media in tackling the challenges faced by Gulf states.
They emphasized that media is vital in enhancing awareness, fostering loyalty, and mentoring the youth. Continued investments in human capital were deemed essential for bolstering the long-term stability and resilience of the Gulf.
Mohammed Al-Mulla articulated the necessity for a collaborative Gulf defence force, marking it as essential during this pivotal moment. Such cooperation, he argued, is crucial for the security of Gulf nations moving forward.
Sawsan Al-Sha’er reiterated the need for a cohesive defence strategy. While acknowledging the effective responses to recent threats, particularly those linked to Iran, she stressed that a unified approach is imperative.
She pointed out that efforts to contain Iran have not fully succeeded, citing the discovery of proxy sleeper cells within multiple Gulf nations. Effective coordination and strict law enforcement are mandatory for addressing such challenges.
On the subject of media, Al-Mulla described its function as part of “geopolitical defence,” emphasizing its significance in combating misinformation, extremist ideologies, and coordinated online attacks. The need to educate youth and enhance their factual understanding was highlighted.
The session closed with a consensus on the importance of developing a robust pan-Gulf media sector along with a code of ethics that promotes responsible journalism and counteracts misinformation throughout the region.
