Google Launches Ironwood TPU, Its Most Advanced AI Chip to Date

Google Launches Ironwood TPU, Its Most Advanced AI Chip to Date

Post by : Badri Ariffin

In a significant development in the AI technology arena, Google has introduced its seventh-generation Tensor Processing Unit (TPU) known as Ironwood. This powerful chip is crafted to handle extensive AI tasks, catering specifically to applications like chatbots and smart agents, thus solidifying Google's role in providing enterprise AI solutions.

Built entirely in-house, Ironwood can interlink up to 9,216 chips within a single pod, which notably minimizes data bottlenecks. This innovative design enables organizations to efficiently execute and scale extensive AI models. Google asserts that this new generation of chips offers over fourfold the performance compared to its predecessors, all while enhancing energy efficiency.

Before its public rollout, Ironwood was trialed with specific partners earlier this year. Noteworthy is AI startup Anthropic, which plans to implement nearly one million Ironwood TPUs for its Claude AI model, demonstrating notable interest from top AI developers.

As part of the Ironwood launch, Google is also amplifying its cloud services, introducing improvements targeted at offering faster, more adaptable, and cost-efficient solutions. The cloud division continues its upward trajectory, showcasing Q3 2025 revenue of $15.15 billion, marking a 34% increase compared to the previous year, a reflection of the surging need for AI-driven infrastructure.

With the ongoing proliferation of AI workloads across various sectors, Google’s Ironwood TPU signifies a strategic move toward equipping enterprises with high-performance and scalable solutions. Furthermore, this chip positions Google to more effectively challenge Nvidia's GPU leadership while presenting a potentially more energy-efficient and scalable option for large-scale AI operations.
