Rising water levels from the Ottawa River have led to significant impacts on approximately 500 buildings in Gatineau. Fortunately, officials report that conditions are starting to stabilize following extensive flooding caused by heavy rain and melting snow from spring.
Authorities indicated that around 190 properties are at immediate risk of flooding, while 296 other buildings could become isolated as water surrounds crucial areas. The situation has forced some residents to evacuate voluntarily, with at least 12 people choosing to leave their homes for safety.
The floods have also affected local infrastructure, with 46 streets impacted and at least 13 currently only accessible by boat. Flood warnings are still in effect for many areas along the river, from Pembroke to Hawkesbury, while officials vigilantly monitor evolving conditions.
The Ottawa River Regulation Planning Board noted that water levels are starting to stabilize at significant points. Although minor increases were observed midweek, forecasts predict a gradual decrease in levels in the days ahead, particularly in Hull. Nevertheless, officials warn that additional rises may still occur later in the spring due to snowpack lingering in northern reservoirs.
Local leaders in Gatineau have advised residents to remain cautious as improvement signs surface. Mayor Maude Marquis-Bissonnette indicated that while stabilization seems hopeful, water levels are still elevated, rendering communities vulnerable. Emergency teams are actively monitoring the situation, urging residents to keep protective measures in place, like dikes, and to avoid flooded roads.
Support services have been activated, with the city establishing assistance centres that connect residents with relief organizations such as the Red Cross to address immediate needs and assist in recovery planning.
Additionally, the floods have disrupted transportation and daily activities. A ferry service between Cumberland and Masson is currently suspended due to unsafe water conditions, and authorities in nearby Ottawa have cautioned boaters to keep off the river to prevent additional damage from waves impacting flood barriers and properties.
Meanwhile, further flood warnings have been issued for surrounding waterways, particularly in sections of the Mississippi River watershed, where water levels are anticipated to rise before eventually dropping.
Overall, while there are early indications of improvement, officials stress that the risk persists. Residents in vulnerable low-lying areas are advised to remain vigilant, as upcoming weather patterns and runoff levels will greatly affect the region's recovery.
