The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) is under fire once again, as members of the national cricket team have voiced their dismay over the reinstatement of a controversial official. This decision comes after the team was recently eliminated from contention for the upcoming T20 World Cup.
M. Najmul Islam has been reinstated as the head of the BCB’s finance department just days after his removal from responsibilities. This move has sparked anger and disappointment among players, who feel their grievances have been overlooked by the board.
A senior player, wishing to remain anonymous, expressed mock disbelief at the decision, indicating a broader sentiment among team members that their opinions are disregarded.
Najmul was initially removed from his position on January 18 following protests from several senior players against his remarks during a controversial episode. He had defended the board’s choice not to send the team to India for the T20 World Cup due to security issues. This led to the International Cricket Council (ICC) withdrawing Bangladesh from the tournament, instead favoring Scotland.
In the midst of the conflict, Najmul controversially stated that players would not receive payment if the withdrawal occurred, further claiming that the team had not justified support by failing to win major ICC competitions. These remarks ignited significant backlash from both players and cricket organizations.
The Cricket Welfare Association of Bangladesh (CWAB) condemned Najmul’s statements and called for his dismissal. The board was compelled to take action by issuing a show-cause notice and temporarily suspending him from his duties. However, his return has reopened wounds for many.
Adding fuel to the fire, Najmul previously accused former captain Tamim Iqbal of being an “agent of India” after Tamim urged for measured and thoughtful engagement with India. This comment was heavily criticized and seen as detrimental to team spirit and the integrity of Bangladesh cricket.
Current Test captain Najmul Hossain Shanto has also voiced his concerns, calling for a measured and sustainable approach. He shared that players are currently under immense mental strain due to ongoing instability and internal disputes.
These recurring controversies have thrown the BCB's leadership and decision-making processes into question. As Bangladesh cricket seeks stability and clear guidance, the board’s actions seem to create further divisions instead of fostering unity.
Failing to address the situation effectively may jeopardize player morale, diminish public trust, and impede the future development of cricket in Bangladesh.
