A 54-year-old inmate, Michael Lee King, was executed by lethal injection at Florida State Prison for the 2008 abduction, assault, and murder of Denise Amber Lee. Authorities confirmed he was pronounced dead on March 17, 2026.
The crime gained national attention after the victim managed to call 911 from her attacker’s phone while being held captive, desperately pleading for help. Despite multiple emergency calls from witnesses and family members, communication failures delayed the response, allowing the crime to unfold.
Following the tragedy, lawmakers passed the Denise Amber Lee Act, aimed at improving emergency response systems and operator training. The victim’s family also established a foundation to raise awareness and enhance 911 efficiency nationwide.
King’s execution came after both the Florida Supreme Court and the U.S. Supreme Court rejected his final appeals. This marks Florida’s fourth execution in 2026, reflecting the state’s continued enforcement of capital punishment laws.
