Central Vietnam is grappling with catastrophic floods, incessant rainfall, and landslides that have tragically resulted in at least 16 deaths since the weekend. On Thursday, the government issued a report highlighting the rising fatalities as water levels climb dangerously in already inundated towns and villages.
Over the last three days, numerous locations in central Vietnam have experienced rainfall exceeding 1,500 millimeters, overwhelming riverbanks and drainage systems. These torrential rains have prompted landslides in mountainous regions while sweeping through adjacent low-lying communities, demolishing homes and interrupting transportation routes.
This affected region is vital for the nation’s coffee industry and tourism sector. Coastal towns and popular beach resorts have been severely affected, forcing both residents and visitors to seek refuge in safer areas. Emergency services are being mobilized to aid those stranded and to deliver essential supplies such as food, water, and medical care.
Local authorities have advised people to remain indoors and avoid travel through flooded zones. They have also cautioned about the potential for additional landslides as rainfall is forecasted to continue in the upcoming days.
Vietnam routinely faces significant rainfall and flooding during monsoon season, and the central provinces are particularly susceptible due to their rugged landscapes and extensive river systems. Emergency teams are vigilantly monitoring the situation as they work towards ensuring the safety of residents and mitigating further loss of life.
Authorities expect water levels to stay elevated in many towns and are making preparations for temporary shelters and relief supplies for the displaced populations. The government has urged citizens to remain alert and adhere to safety directives.
