In a pivotal decision, the U.S. Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) has approved a five-year extension for Sempra Energy's Cameron LNG export facility, allowing for completion by March 16, 2033.
Majority-owned by Sempra Infrastructure, Cameron LNG has been instrumental in positioning the U.S. as a leading exporter of supercooled natural gas since 2023. The facility is critical in addressing the surging global demand for liquefied natural gas (LNG) while fortifying domestic energy assets.
The U.S. LNG sector gained fresh momentum due to policy reforms under the Trump administration, which ended the moratorium on new export permits in early 2025. This change has spurred investments, enabling U.S. LNG projects to secure a larger share of the international market.
Sempra's extension request, submitted last October, underlined the complex engineering and regulatory hurdles tied to such a massive project. The approval grants essential time to meet safety, environmental, and operational standards without the pressure of rushed deadlines.
Experts indicate that this extension could enhance the stability of U.S. LNG supply, ensuring reliable exports and sustaining long-term contracts with global buyers, further solidifying America's presence in international energy markets.
