Melania Trump has taken a stand in support of new foster care laws being considered in the U.S. Congress, declaring it a “moral duty” to uplift vulnerable children’s lives. During a crucial meeting with legislators on April 15, 2026, she underscored the urgent need for effective policies that confront the genuine challenges faced by children within the foster care system.
The First Lady collaborated with the influential House Ways and Means Committee, where talks were held to promote legislation aimed at safeguarding and empowering youth in foster care. She asserted that children should be recognized not merely as dependents, but as individuals deserving of dignity, opportunities, and care.
Emphasizing the need for tangible reforms, Melania Trump pointed out various critical issues impacting foster children, such as unstable housing, inadequate educational support, financial hardships, transportation obstacles, and limited access to technology. These factors, she noted, significantly hinder children's chances of achieving long-term stability and success.
This initiative builds on her previous efforts, including the launch of the “Fostering the Future” program in 2021 as part of her BE BEST campaign. This project aims to provide foster youth with pathways to higher education, particularly in technology sectors, thereby facilitating their transition into stable jobs and financial independence.
Currently, the program is operational at over 20 universities across the U.S., including prestigious institutions like Vanderbilt University, University of Miami, Louisiana State University, and more. Despite these initiatives, she highlighted that only about three percent of foster youth achieved a college degree in 2025, indicating the pressing need for more robust systemic support.
She referenced recent measures like the TAKE IT DOWN Act and the “Fostering the Future” Executive Order as positive steps, but emphasized that Congressional legislation could yield more significant and lasting change.
In conclusion, Melania Trump called on lawmakers to take decisive action, stating that new legislation has the potential to change lives and transform the dreams of foster children into fundamental rights. The proposed reforms aim to establish long-term solutions to enhance educational access, stability, and overall well-being for children in the foster system.
