Indian U-17 Women's Team Set for AFC Cup Challenge

Indian U-17 Women's Team Set for AFC Cup Challenge

Post by : Shweta

The Indian women’s national under-17 football squad has landed in Suzhou for the AFC U-17 Women’s Asian Cup 2026, brimming with confidence and a strong sense of purpose. Under the guidance of head coach Pamela Conti, the Young Tigresses are prepared to face formidable rivals from across Asia in their pursuit of a place in the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup 2026, set to take place in Morocco.

Kicking off their Group B schedule, India will challenge the Australian U-17 women's national team on May 2, followed by matches against the Japanese U-17 team on May 5 and the U-17 team from Lebanon on May 8. All matches are scheduled at the Suzhou Taihu Football Sports Centre.

For India, this tournament holds significant importance as the leading teams will secure qualification for the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco later this year. It is an exceptional opportunity for the Indian squad to go toe-to-toe with Asia's best and potentially make history on the world stage.

Coach Pamela Conti emphasized the team’s offensive mindset, stating they intend to compete aggressively rather than adopt a defensive posture, especially against traditional powerhouses like Japan and Australia. She reaffirmed that the aim is to exhibit bravery on the pitch and engage with their rivals head-on.

Conti remarked on the players’ readiness to give their all for the nation while favoring an attacking style of play over mere defense against stronger adversaries. The coach expressed a desire for their opponents to respect India’s gameplay and relentless spirit.

Despite the mounting pressure, Conti remains unfazed, viewing this significant tournament as an exciting challenge. The players, she noted, are devoted to improving their skills and competing to the best of their abilities.

India's rigorous preparation has spanned months, with training camps mostly conducted in Bengaluru, complemented by participation in the SAFF U-19 Women’s Championship in Nepal, where they emerged victorious. Additional friendly matches in Myanmar and Russia were also part of the build-up to the Asian Cup.

Conti recognized the exceptional commitment demonstrated by the young athletes throughout their preparation, highlighting that many had been away from their families for nearly four months, tirelessly training for this tournament. The dedication and sacrifices made by the team reflect their motivation to represent India with pride.

The squad boasts several promising talents, including captain Julan Nongmaithem, who, at just 15 years old, has already made her senior national team debut and will now take on the leadership of the U-17 team at the continental event.

Describing Julan as pivotal to their success with a bright future ahead, Conti underscored that team success hinges on collaboration rather than relying on individual performers. The overarching focus remains on teamwork, composure, and discipline across all performance areas.

With skilled attackers like Anushka Kumari and Pearl Fernandes who have showcased significant goal-scoring promise in youth events, the coaching team believes that overall team coherence will be even more vital than any individual showcase.

As football fans in India eagerly await the team’s progress in China, anticipation builds for women’s football to flourish in the nation. While past squads have faced challenges in major Asian tournaments, the U-17 team is set on rewriting that narrative with a courageous and optimistic strategy.

Equipped with solid preparations, elevated confidence, and a driven squad, India is now poised to tackle its opponents at the AFC U-17 Women’s Asian Cup and pursue a historic qualifying spot at the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup.
