A harrowing train accident near Jakarta has tragically claimed 14 lives while injuring many others, following a collision between an express train and a halted commuter train late on Monday night. The crash occurred near the Bekasi Timur station, prompting emergency services to undertake a prolonged rescue effort lasting nearly 12 hours to extract victims from the wreckage.
Initial investigations reveal that the disaster began when a taxi collided with a commuter train at a level crossing, leaving the train stranded on the tracks. Shortly thereafter, a long-distance express train approached and was unable to stop in time, crashing into the rear of the halted train. The resulting impact caused extensive damage, scattering twisted metal and debris across the scene.
Emergency responders from Indonesia's National Search and Rescue Agency worked tirelessly through the night, employing heavy machinery to pry open the wreckage and rescue those trapped inside. Fortunately, all passengers from the express train were evacuated safely, but the commuter train bore the brunt of the disaster, with 14 fatalities confirmed.
Survivors recounted moments filled with chaos and fear. Many found themselves trapped beneath collapsed seats and luggage as darkness enveloped the train following the collision. Injured passengers were quickly transported to nearby hospitals, where medical staff prioritized treatment for those in critical conditions.
Authorities have indicated that numerous individuals sustained injuries, although the precise figures and severity are still under review. Local hospitals have remained on high alert as families congregate, anxiously seeking news about their loved ones.
Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto visited the injured and extended condolences to the families of the victims. He has called for an immediate inquiry into the accident's causes and emphasized the need for urgent enhancements to the railway safety system.
Preliminary assessments imply that inadequately managed level crossings could have played a significant role in this calamity. In response, the government has pledged to replace such crossings with safer options, including flyovers, to mitigate future risks.
This tragic incident underscores continuing safety issues within Indonesia’s rail infrastructure, where accidents involving crossings have been a recurring theme. Now, many affected families seek closure and accountability as the nation mourns those who lost their lives during a banal journey that turned horrifically disastrous.
