Austrian filmmaker Sandra Wollner won the top prize in the prestigious Cannes Film Festival Un Certain Regard category with her emotional family drama Everytime. The announcement was made during the awards ceremony in Cannes, where the film received praise for its subtle storytelling and emotional depth.
The Un Certain Regard section is considered one of the most respected categories at Cannes outside the main competition lineup. Over the years, the section has helped launch the international careers of several acclaimed directors and filmmakers from around the world.
In her acceptance speech, Sandra Wollner spoke passionately about the importance of preserving originality and personal storytelling in cinema during the rise of artificial intelligence. She warned against creative systems that produce repetitive ideas and stressed the value of unusual, emotional and deeply human stories in filmmaking.
Critics praised Everytime for its sensitive exploration of grief, loss and emotional healing within a family struggling after an unexpected death. Industry publication ScreenDaily described the film as a carefully crafted and emotionally powerful drama that leaves a lasting impact on audiences.
The festival also honored several other international productions during the ceremony. Elephants in The Fog became the first Nepali film to win the jury prize in the Un Certain Regard section. Director Abinash Bikram Shah celebrated the achievement alongside the film’s cast and crew on stage.
Meanwhile, the animated French feature Iron Boy received the special jury prize, while actresses Marina de Tavira, Daniela Marin Navarro and Mariangel Villegas jointly won the best actress award for their performances in Forever Your Maternal Animal.
Actor Bradley Fiomona Dembeasset won the best actor award for Congo Boy, a story about a teenager trying to pursue music amid conflict and instability in the Central African Republic.
Film experts say this year’s Un Certain Regard lineup reflected growing global diversity in cinema, with filmmakers from Europe, Asia, Africa and Latin America presenting deeply personal and socially relevant stories on the international stage.
