Etihad Airways is set to significantly expand its fleet by ordering 32 new Airbus widebody aircraft, marking a bold step in its mission to position itself among the world's premier full-service airlines. This order comprises A350-1000s, A350F freighters, and A330-900s, sourced through direct acquisitions and lease agreements, with the first deliveries expected to commence in 2027—one of the earliest available slots for new widebody aircraft globally.
This move comes on the heels of Etihad's prior agreement for 28 new Boeing widebodies earlier in 2025, making the total new widebody orders for this year reach 60 across both Airbus and Boeing platforms. This strategic expansion enables Etihad to substantially enhance its capacity, strengthen its global network, and provide superior travel experiences for its passengers.
Antonoaldo Neves, the CEO of Etihad Airways, stated, "This acquisition of 32 additional widebodies, with deliveries starting in 2027, is a clear indication of our ability to secure valuable delivery positions and stay ahead of capacity constraints on a global scale. Our investments empower us to maintain our growth trajectory, enhance our passenger experience, and pull more visitors to Abu Dhabi."
He also stressed the airline's steadfast commitment to Abu Dhabi’s future in aviation, asserting that these aircraft orders highlight the emirate's promise as a major global hub. "With 60 new widebody aircraft ordered in just this year, Etihad is crafting one of the world’s most advanced, efficient, and versatile long-haul fleets," Neves noted.
Benoît de Saint-Exupéry, Airbus Executive Vice President of Commercial Aircraft Sales, remarked, "Etihad Airways’ continuous investment in our latest generation widebody aircraft exemplifies the strength of our partnership and our unified vision for the future of aviation in the UAE and beyond. The combination of A350 Family and A330neo will afford unparalleled efficiency and adaptability to Etihad’s operations, enhancing its long-term growth and global reach."
This strategic expansion comes at a time when the global aviation sector is recovering from the pandemic, as airlines strive to secure modern, fuel-efficient aircraft. Etihad’s investment ensures it remains competitive, sustainable, and poised to meet the rising demand for international travel, solidifying Abu Dhabi's reputation as a prime destination and transit hub.
By securing early delivery slots and diversifying its fleet with Airbus and Boeing aircraft, Etihad is well-positioned to take advantage of increased passenger traffic, fortify cargo operations, and improve long-term operational flexibility.
The long-haul fleet expansion marks a significant milestone in UAE’s aviation landscape, showcasing confidence in the sector's potential and Etihad’s dedication to providing exceptional service and efficiency for travelers worldwide.
