Liberal MP Nathaniel Erskine-Smith from Toronto has stated that his prospects for leading the Ontario Liberal Party are now considered “less likely” following a narrow defeat in the Scarborough Southwest provincial nomination race. The federal MP has lodged an appeal after narrowly losing the contest to businessman Ahsanul Hafiz by a mere 19 votes.
The closely watched nomination garnered significant attention within Ontario's political landscape, as Erskine-Smith was anticipated to be a strong candidate for future leadership. Securing this nomination would have bolstered his position in provincial politics and support for a leadership run.
Following the announcement, Erskine-Smith raised questions about the voting process, suggesting irregularities in voter identification checks during the nomination meeting. Some team members reported unusual occurrences that they had “never encountered before.” Nonetheless, Ontario Liberal officials defended the integrity of the election, asserting that the appeal will be examined fairly by the party’s arbitration committee.
The competition for the nomination heated up recently, with various candidates accusing one another of political manipulation ahead of the leadership race. Local contenders also criticized Erskine-Smith for allegedly using the Scarborough Southwest riding for personal political aspirations instead of concentrating on community issues.
Currently, Erskine-Smith is the MP for Beaches–East York in Toronto and was a runner-up in the Ontario Liberal leadership race last year. Earlier in 2023, he indicated his interest in another leadership bid, making him a formidable candidate for the provincial party. His recent defeat, however, has led to uncertainty regarding his future in politics.
The byelection for Scarborough Southwest gained political traction after the resignation of former Ontario NDP deputy leader Doly Begum, who moved on to federal politics. This vacancy has prompted the Ontario Liberals to view the riding as a critical opportunity to enhance their standing ahead of the next provincial election.
In light of the ongoing controversy, interim Ontario Liberal leader John Fraser expressed trust in the internal review process, stating that the appeal will be scrutinized with care and professionalism. As of now, no timeline has been provided for when a decision regarding the appeal will be reached.
