Enzo Fernandez has been sidelined for Chelsea FC’s upcoming two matches after his recent comments concerning his future led to disciplinary measures from the club.
The 25-year-old midfielder, rumored to be on Real Madrid's radar, expressed in a podcast his desire to experience life in Madrid. These statements have heightened speculation about his exit from Stamford Bridge.
Head coach Liam Rosenior announced that Fernandez will miss both the FA Cup quarter-final against Port Vale and a crucial Premier League match against Manchester City.
Rosenior labeled the midfielder's comments as a violation of the club's core values, indicating that “a line was crossed” regarding Chelsea’s cultural standards and expectations. He confirmed that the disciplinary action was a joint decision supported by management, ownership, and the players.
Despite the suspension, Rosenior expressed his respect for Fernandez, acknowledging his crucial role in the team and his aspirations for success. He underscored that ensuring discipline and unity within the club is of utmost importance.
This incident follows previous statements from Fernandez after Chelsea's UEFA Champions League defeat to Paris Saint-Germain, where he expressed doubt about his future.
Since his transfer to Chelsea in 2023 for a British-record fee of £107 million, Fernandez has become a pivotal player and was named vice-captain shortly thereafter. Nevertheless, his latest comments have sparked new concerns regarding the team's stability.
Additionally, defender Marc Cucurella has alluded to internal issues, indicating instability within the squad and questioning the club's recruitment strategy.
Chelsea clarified that the suspension is a temporary measure, and they are open to reintegrating Fernandez should he align with the club's values moving forward.
