On Saturday, early voting commenced for New York City’s pivotal mayoral race, allowing locals to vote ahead of the November 4 Election Day. Zohran Mamdani, a 34-year-old progressive Democrat, has surged to the forefront, leading former governor Andrew Cuomo by a significant 18 points in the polls.
Mamdani’s campaign has captured the enthusiasm of younger voters, centering on the city's escalating living expenses. He aims to implement a rent freeze for two million residents in rent-stabilized housing, making affordable living a key element of his agenda.
According to recent figures from Victory Insights, Mamdani enjoys 47 percent support, standing far ahead of Cuomo and Republican contender Curtis Sliwa, who lags at 16 percent. New Yorkers have until November 2 to participate in early voting, ensuring their voices are heard prior to the new administration taking over in the upcoming year.
The dynamics of the mayoral race have been influenced by national politics, as President Donald Trump has repeatedly attacked Mamdani, labeling him a “communist” due to his proposals advocating for free public transportation and childcare. Despite facing this criticism, Mamdani has expressed a readiness to collaborate with federal entities if it could aid in lowering living costs in the city.
Further bolstering Mamdani’s campaign, Hakeem Jeffries, the leading Democrat in the U.S. House of Representatives, has publicly supported him. This Sunday, Mamdani will attend a major “get out the vote” rally in Queens with Senator Bernie Sanders and Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez to energize his supporters.
This election follows the resignation of Mayor Eric Adams amid corruption scandals, who controversially endorsed Cuomo after previously denouncing him as a “snake and a liar.” Analysts suggest that while Cuomo may gain some advantages from Adams’ backing, it is unlikely to mitigate Mamdani's substantial lead.
As early voting locations welcome New Yorkers, Mamdani remains the candidate to monitor, promising an innovative approach to city governance while addressing urgent matters such as housing stability, public transit, and childcare, all in the context of a highly scrutinized national landscape.
