Dubai: Filipina tennis sensation Alexandra “Alex” Eala is gearing up for her main draw debut at the Australian Open, where she will face US player Alycia Parks, ranked No. 100, on Sunday, January 18.
At just 20 years old, Eala has ascended to a career-high ranking of No. 49 and enters the tournament riding a wave of confidence due to her recent impressive performances.
Eala’s Impressive Form
Eala recently made headlines by reaching the semifinals at the WTA ASB Classic in Auckland, followed by a convincing victory in an exhibition match against Olympic silver medalist Donna Vekic at the Kooyong Classic. These achievements have supercharged her confidence as she approaches her Grand Slam debut.
Parks: A Resilient Challenger
Alycia Parks, aged 25, poses a significant challenge even with her ranking. Renowned for her potent serve, she holds the record for the fastest serve in US Open history at 129 mph, a feat she shares with Venus Williams. Additionally, Parks clinched the 2023 Lyon Open title and made it to the third round of the Australian Open two years back.
First Tour Encounter
The upcoming match will mark the inaugural meeting between Eala and Parks on the WTA Tour. This event signifies another accomplishment for Eala, as she completes her participation in the main draws of all four Grand Slam tournaments.
What’s on the Line
“I believe this is the best I’ve played so far,” Eala stated, reflecting on her warm-up matches in Melbourne. “I feel I'm in a good place, and I aim to keep that momentum going.”
Should Eala advance past Parks, she will face a formidable second-round opponent, either world No. 19 Karolína Muchová, a former French Open finalist, or Romania’s Jaqueline Cristian, currently ranked No. 37.
