Dubai has reached an important milestone towards transforming urban transportation as the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) alongside Joby Aviation successfully executed the initial crewed electric air taxi flight between two distinct locations in the UAE. The aircraft took off from the Dubai Jetman Helipad in Margham and landed 17 minutes later at Al Maktoum International Airport during the Dubai Airshow 2025, marking a historic first point-to-point eVTOL journey in the nation.
This flight strengthens Dubai’s ambition to roll out commercial aerial taxi services by 2026. Simultaneously, RTA announced that the construction of the world's first dedicated air taxi vertiport adjacent to Dubai International Airport has exceeded the 60% completion milestone. Developed by the UK’s Skyports Infrastructure, this multi-tiered facility has reached its maximum structural height and aims to accommodate thousands of landings annually once operational.
To support the expanding network, RTA has entered partnerships with Emaar Properties, Atlantis The Royal, and Wasl Asset Management Group. Their developments will feature additional vertiports spread across bustling locations, establishing the initial route system for the service. Notable sites include Zabeel Dubai Mall, Palm Jumeirah at Atlantis The Royal, and Dubai Marina near the American University in Dubai—facilitating rapid connections between airports, commercial hubs, and major attractions.
Joby’s electric air taxi is designed for short urban trips featuring vertical take-off and landing capabilities. It operates with six rotors and four battery packs, achieving speeds of up to 320 km/h with a range of about 160 km. Quieter than typical helicopters, the aircraft can carry four passengers alongside a pilot while requiring minimal landing space.
This recent flight is part of Joby’s ongoing testing program in the emirate. Previous tests in Margham have focused on the aircraft's performance under local weather and airspace conditions. Continuous testing will pave the way for broader operations as the anticipated 2026 launch approaches.
Skyports’ principal vertiport near DXB spans approximately 3,100 square meters across four levels, incorporating parking facilities, charging areas, take-off pads, and fully climate-controlled passenger spaces. Its construction adheres to the highest global safety specifications and is projected to handle around 42,000 landings annually, serving nearly 170,000 travelers.
With agreements finalized, infrastructure underway, and increased test flights, Dubai is set to become the first city globally to implement a comprehensive urban aerial mobility network. This innovative system aims to significantly reduce travel durations—like shortening the journey from Dubai International Airport to Palm Jumeirah to approximately 10 minutes—offering a swift, efficient, and sustainable travel alternative for both residents and tourists with the official service launch targeted for 2026.
