A significant fire broke out at a power facility in Russia’s Moscow region on Sunday, triggered by drone strikes from Ukraine, marking one of Kyiv's most impactful assaults into Russian territory.
This incident occurred at the Shatura Power Station, situated approximately 120 km east of Moscow. The drone strikes resulted in a substantial fire, affecting heating services for thousands of residents and sending plumes of smoke into the sky.
Details of the Incident
As per local officials, multiple Ukrainian drones targeted the power plant in the early hours of Sunday. Some drones were intercepted by air-defence systems, while others successfully struck the facility, leading to explosions and widespread fire at critical equipment.
Social media users shared footage depicting brilliant fire explosions and thick black smoke billowing from the power station as loud bangs reverberated in the background.
Consequences for the Local Community
The Shatura town, with a population of approximately 33,000, faced heating disruptions amid near-freezing temperatures. Officials confirmed that backup power systems were activated, and mobile units were being deployed to assist those impacted.
Reports from the area mentioned that three transformers were engulfed in flames, compromising a large portion of the facility.
Wider Implications
This attack occurs during the fourth year of the continued conflict between Russia and Ukraine. Russia has been ramping up assaults on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, frequently causing blackouts and shortages across the country.
In retaliation, Ukraine has been focusing on targeting Russian oil facilities to hinder Moscow’s financial gains from energy exports. While Ukrainian forces have struck some power facilities near the border, this marks a significant attack on a power station that serves the broader Moscow region, home to over 22 million residents.
Response from Russia
The Russian defense ministry reported the interception of 75 Ukrainian drones on Sunday, including several near Moscow and many over the Black Sea. Flight operations at Vnukovo Airport in Moscow were temporarily halted for safety precautions.
There has been no immediate comment from Ukraine regarding the drone strike.
About the Shatura Power Station
Established shortly after the Russian revolution, the Shatura Power Station is among Russia's oldest power facilities, originally using peat as fuel before transitioning to various energy sources over the decades.
