SINGAPORE – The United States Senate has confirmed Dr Anjani Sinha, a renowned orthopaedic surgeon specialising in sports medicine, as the new US ambassador to Singapore. The confirmation vote took place on Tuesday, October 7, with a simple majority of 51-47 approving his nomination.
Dr Sinha, originally from India, has built a distinguished career in medicine, operating multiple successful medical practices across eight locations in New York. He has also served as a senior surgical consultant in Florida. Dr Sinha completed his medical education at MGM Medical School and Delhi University in India, earning a Masters in Orthopaedic Surgery.
During his Senate confirmation hearing on July 9, Dr Sinha highlighted Singapore’s strategic importance in the Indo-Pacific region. He said, “Close cooperation with Singapore, along with our other allies and partners in the region, is more critical today than ever before.” He also expressed his commitment to expanding defence and security cooperation, strengthening economic and trade relations, and enhancing people-to-people connections between the US and Singapore.
Despite minor difficulties in responding to some questions, including an initial error regarding the US trade surplus with Singapore in 2024, Dr Sinha thanked President Donald Trump for nominating him and Secretary Rubio for their support. Republican Senator Lindsey Graham introduced Dr Sinha warmly, noting his friendship with President Trump for over a decade.
Dr Sinha’s confirmation comes alongside other ambassadorial appointments, including Sergio Gor, who will serve as US ambassador to India, and Sean O’Neill, who will be the ambassador to Thailand.
With his appointment, Dr Sinha is expected to strengthen the US-Singapore partnership and play a significant role in advancing US interests in the region. Analysts note that his professional background and leadership skills will help in fostering closer bilateral ties, particularly in trade, security, and healthcare collaboration.
This appointment also reflects the US commitment to maintaining strong diplomatic relations with Singapore, a key strategic partner in Southeast Asia. Dr Sinha’s tenure is likely to focus on deepening defence cooperation, boosting economic partnerships, and enhancing cultural and educational exchanges between the two nations.
