A severe fire swept through Saganoseki in Oita city, Japan, destroying more than 170 buildings and turning a serene coastal area into a landscape of chaos. The inferno, which ignited at approximately 5:40 PM on Tuesday, continued to rage through the night, remaining only partially subdued by early Wednesday morning, as reported by Japan’s Fire and Disaster Management Agency.
Authorities quickly evacuated local residents, responding to the rapidly spreading flames that engulfed the densely populated hillside neighborhood adjacent to the historic fishing port. Almost 175 individuals were relocated to emergency shelters, leaving their homes and personal items behind as the fire advanced.
Search for Missing Individual Amid Extensive Damage
Despite extensive firefighting efforts, officials have confirmed that one person remains missing, heightening concerns over potential casualties as rescue teams navigate the hazardous debris and smoldering structures. The cause of the blaze is still being investigated.
Aerial images released by Japanese news outlets revealed entire rows of homes reduced to mere ashes, with metal frames twisted from the heat and thick clouds of smoke stretching across the coastal scenery. The fire has also expanded into adjacent forest areas, making containment more challenging.
Additional Firefighting Support Requested as Fire Grows
As conditions continued to deteriorate, Oita’s governor requested further assistance. In response, a military helicopter has been dispatched to assist with the fire suppression, as confirmed by Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi on X.
Ground crews have been battling the flames throughout the night, facing winds from the coast that propelled the fire. Many firefighters returning from long shifts have described this incident as one of the most demanding they’ve faced recently, due to the cramped arrangement of wooden structures and the hilly landscape, which accelerated the fire’s spread.
Community Renowned for Mackerel Faces Desolation
Saganoseki is famed for its Seki-brand mackerel, a premium culinary delight attracting fishermen and visitors from all over Japan. Now, the once picturesque waterfront and hillside residences are marred by extensive destruction.
The emotional impact on the community is profound. Many evacuated residents watched in distress from shelters as live broadcasts captured the flames engulfing homes that have been in their families for generations. Others hurried to salvage their belongings before authorities urged them to leave.
Investigation Launched Amid Urgent Recovery Operations
Authorities plan to initiate a comprehensive investigation once the fire is fully extinguished. Recovery efforts will focus on evaluating the structural damage, potential environmental hazards, and the long-term impact on the local fishing economy.
For now, the primary objective is to manage remaining hotspots and locate the missing person.
As winter approaches and numerous homes lie in ruins, community support services are being organized to offer temporary housing, medical assistance, and psychological support.
