Copenhagen: Denmark has announced a temporary ban on all civilian drone flights this week as part of strict security measures ahead of the upcoming European Union summit in Copenhagen.
The country’s transport ministry said the step was necessary to “simplify security work” for the police and prevent any “foreign drones from creating uncertainty and disruption.” The ban will remain in place until October 3, with violations carrying penalties of fines or imprisonment for up to two years.
The decision comes after a series of recent drone incidents across Denmark and other European nations. Unidentified drones have been sighted over Danish military sites, forcing the temporary closure of airports in Copenhagen, Oslo, Aalborg, and Billund in recent days. Authorities have described the incursions as part of a “hybrid attack” and investigations are ongoing.
Denmark currently holds the rotating presidency of the Council of the EU, and officials are on high alert to ensure the safety of both Danish citizens and international delegates attending the summit.
Neighboring countries have stepped in to support Denmark. Sweden has offered military anti-drone systems and radar technology, while France is sending a specialist helicopter and a team of 35 experts to assist with security operations.
Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said authorities are still investigating who is behind the drone activity and did not rule out possible Russian involvement. Moscow, however, has denied any role, firmly rejecting accusations.
The issue of drone intrusions has heightened concerns across Europe. NATO has increased vigilance in the Baltic region, while defence ministers from 10 EU countries have agreed to build a coordinated “drone wall” in response to these growing threats.
Meanwhile, other nations have also reported drone activity. Norway recorded incidents near Bronnoysund Airport and its largest military base over the weekend, while Romania diverted flights in Bucharest after pilots spotted a drone in restricted airspace.
With tensions rising, European governments are treating the drone threat as a serious security challenge, particularly as suspicions of hybrid warfare and cross-border incursions continue to grow.
