New developments have arisen in the grim investigation surrounding the recent fire at Flourish Stay B&B in Delhi, which resulted in the deaths of 21 individuals.
Local resident Mohammed Wasim reported that Lavkesh Bajaj, the establishment's owner, showed up at the scene while the fire was still active but departed shortly thereafter.
Wasim, aged 37, mentioned he arrived at around 8:30 am and immediately observed thick smoke billowing from the building. He called Bajaj at approximately 8:52 am to alert him to the escalating situation.
"I informed him that the fire was enormous. He stated that he was already aware. I urged him to come to the location before hanging up our call," Wasim recounted.
According to Wasim, Bajaj appeared at the site about ten minutes later. He saw Bajaj outside the building clad in a white T-shirt, but did not engage him during the rescue efforts.
"I was occupied with assisting in rescue operations, but I did spot him there. He lingered for approximately 10 to 15 minutes before departing," Wasim elaborated.
Authorities and local residents disclosed that Bajaj owns two additional B&B businesses in the surrounding area and regularly frequented the restaurant associated with Flourish Stay B&B.
Investigators clarified that while Bajaj is the owner, documents indicate that Jay Mishra holds the license, tasked with managing the guest house.
Police confirmed that Jay Mishra, listed in court filings as an accountant, is currently missing. Another individual, Rakesh, who is thought to have managed the B&B, is also unaccounted for and being sought by the authorities.
In the meantime, a magistrate in Delhi has placed Lavkesh Bajaj under four days of police custody, emphasizing the necessity of custodial questioning given the gravity of the allegations and the ongoing probe into this devastating incident.
The investigation is ongoing as officials continue to delve into the factors leading to one of Delhi's most lethal fire tragedies in years.
